3D TV without glasses
So, when can we expect 3d tv’s without glasses? It might be a little sooner than you think. Samsung recently exposed a long term outline of their display technology over the next few years, and it shows that glass free 3d is coming and is a priority in their research and development pipeline.
As shown by other devices, namely the Nintendo 3DS, it’s possible. Yes, we are aware of the limitations of Nintendo’s implementation (1 person at a time, with a limited viewing angle), but it’s a commercially available product that proves that this technology is possible, and will be available to us before sooner than you might think…
Viewing angle concerns
Samsung has outlined their technology offers multiple viewing angles, which has been a major concern of the technology, and why it’s not available just yet. Current 3D TV models use active shutter glasses, and enable a very wide viewing angle so many viewers can get in on the action.
2011 and beyond?
When can we expect to see commercially available 3d tv’s without glasses required for viewing on store shelfs? We can only speculate that the market will see it’s first full scale deployment in a few short years – with Samsung publicly announcing a target by 2014. With Nintendo showing that it can be done on a smaller, 1 person scale, we see that 3d tv will be more accessible than ever in the future.
We’ll be updating our site with all the latest details as it becomes available. See this post for more info about Smasung’s 3D TV without glasses efforts.
